Sonic The Hedgehog (2020) Review

2020-03-02 ◦ 5 Minute read

This is a port of an old blog article from a previous website of mine. It does not reflect how I am now, but is ported for completeness sake. Notably, I am quite a big fan of the movie now, and Super Mario 1993 is one of my favorite films of all time. Regardless, I have done my best to port it to this website as it was originally intended, which was difficult as I used to write these articles as JSON with html encoding. Yes, I used to preview and edit posts that way. The movie rating section could not faithfully be ported.

Sonic the Hedgehog. What a great subject matter for me to review. I've already done a Nintendo game, so it's only fitting I write about a Sega Movie.

If you really don't care about Spoilers, or don't care about what I think of key moments, you can see my over-all opinion here:

Movie Rating

Not the best, imo.

  • As a movie in general: 2.45 / 10, A bit worse than 'Meh'. Certainly, no Super Mario Bros. (1993), However.
  • As a children's movie: 7.85/10, Not bad, quite enjoyable. However, there are better options when it comes to general life lessons and educational content.
  • Art-style / Character Design: 5/10, Better than deviant art.

However, if you do care, then read on. Naturally, talking about a movie that only came out1 just over a fortnight2 ago, there is naturally a necessity for a big Spoiler Warning. if you care about it.

The way I’m going to review this is as following; 1) List what happens and what I think of it, and B) give some deeper thoughts afterword.

So, in the beginning of the movie, we are put through a scene where Sonic is racing around in San Francisco, Getting chased by who we presume is Robotnik, and then the good ol' cliché of a record scratch comes along. "Well, you're probably wondering how I got into this mess. Well, let me tell you!\, Which has been done to death and really doesn't fit here. This is Sonic's first of many, many, many, MANY out of character pop-culture references. Anything to get the kiddies happy, aye?

Sonic then introduces his home island, just in case you don't know the character. It's here where he's using his ability for super speed3, and ends up at his house. This then shows that Sonic is an orphan, with a mother that is an owl. The owl itself has clearly not had the Tyson Hesse4 weave of quality. Blah blah blah, Sonic and Owl get attacked by an Echidna tribe, and the owl gives sonic some Warp rings5 and is pushed off to a distant planet.

Cut to modern (ish) day. Sonic's got a mancave in a town called Green Hills6 and spies on people7. He gets sad at being lonely while faking a baseball game and causes a huge blue explosion of energy8, killing the power grid for the west coast of the US. Cue robotnik. Robotnik was played by Jim Carrey9, and naturally, he stole the show. Sadly though, that's about the only good of the movie in my opinion. Jim Carrey. He makes a lot of jokes for the adults in the audience and is just generally funny. He had the only joke I found funny in the entirety of the 1 hour and 39-minute runtime.

Something-Something Sonic gets found out about, something-something sonic needs to run to another planet, something something Sonic finds the cop, and after some talking the cop wants to help Sonic. Robotnik comes over to the cop's house, and starts threatening the cop, yadda yadda Sonic reveals himself and Robotnik gets a punch in the face. This punch breaks his glasses, but after asking for another pair, he doesn't seem to get another at all from that point10.

Then after that, Sonic n' Cop bond for a bit and we're in san Francisco. we're now at the cliché part, and sonic brings us back with "Wanna know how it ends? me too!" which is obviously the funniest part of the movie, causing me and the cinema to fall out of their chairs and water in the eyes to the point they had to pause the performance.

Then the fight comes along, and Sonic imprisons Robotnik11 on the mushroom land12 which revokes him of his human rights. Sonic's a criminal! Doesn't matter though, the "good guys" have won and got £39.1413 for a nondescript fast-food place that does olives, or something.

And then just as quickly as it started, the movie is over. There's a post movie scene where Robotnik is shown to be insane thanks to isolation14, and another after some game-styled credits15 showing the movie, there's a post credits scene showing Tails16 and it's done.

  1. At time of writing.

  2. Scottish slang for 14 days (about 2 weeks), not the game named by a mis-spelling of the word.

  3. Which is later revealed to be due to 'Infinite' power in Sonic's quills. Absolute bollocks.

  4. Also behind the Comic's character designs, Tyson Hesse redesigned sonic from that monstrosity it was originally.

  5. Not to be confused with Sonic 1's bonus rings. Warp rings you can see through, Bonus rings you can't. You won't convince me otherwise.

  6. How creative.

  7. Really instilling great morals into children Guys, keep it up!

  8. Happens 3 times at varying power, and is never explained.

  9. His best movie is the Truman show.

  10. Could probably be I wasn't paying attention. And bad memory.

  11. Now called 'Egg man' for his white egg-like robots.

  12. Which is 100% without a doubt Mushroom Hill Zone. Nice detail, I suppose.

  13. $50 USD @ 2020/03/02

  14. Remember: Sonic's the good guy here.

  15. Copying Pixels. although nowhere near as good as they turned the pixel sprites into vectors with a scanline effect on top.

  16. Not the best Tails I’ve ever seen, But I’ve been on the internet for a fair share so it's not the worst
